No matter
what the mechanism
is
(or what you think it is)
that is dragging you down,
you can still,
almost always,
turn your attention away,
toward natural symbols.
It may not be easy.

If the pain is very great,
try to sleep with the trees
and
let them dream of you.

Trees are
the key,
possibly
the door,
to earth,
to heaven
knows what.

Trees shelter
birds,
squirrels,
and
an occasional snake.
So do we.

Our primitive,
unexamined
belief
in our existential "purity,"
our ontological "integrity"
is
species hubris,
no more
or less
silly
than that of
the Aztecs,
the Romans,
the Goths,
the Republicans.

Fatally
absent-minded
mobile trees.
