Leadership Then...
and Now
Learning from the Past
by Joel Fluker, Washington
Correspondent
The behavior of the American electorate
continues to demonstrate the truth of the old saw about how those who dont study
history are doomed to repeat it.
Recently contemplating the faces and behaviors of the current set of American leaders, we
kept being distracted. Wed be looking at this or that familiar visage, and suddenly
another image, from the past, would pop up in our mind's eye to replace it.
This was disturbing because the replacement images were not exactly those of
historys beautiful people.
Heres the list of people from the present administration on the left. On the right
is the list of historical figures, some of whose images so rudely intruded on our
thoughts.
Your job is to mix and match (and if you dont think Rush Limbaugh is part of the
present administration, you just havent been paying attention). God bless America.
Note: Only those with a tendency to cheat on tests will
pay any attention at all to the fact that the odd-numbered names are ALL
IN RED.

Any ODD-NUMBERED choice on the right is a CORRECT ANSWER, no matter which name on the left
you put it with. To be sure, some of the resulting matches may be a stretch, but if you
think about it long enough you can see how, for example, combinations such as
"Katherine Harris / Grendel," or "Karl Rove / Marie Antoinette" make a
great deal of sense. Granted, the sense is on the whole surreal, but then we are living in
an age of surreal politics, yes?
If you used ONLY odd-numbered choices, we
congratulate you on your historical perspicacity and welcome you to membership in the club
of the Truly But Properly Paranoid.
In contrast, the more EVEN-NUMBERED choices
you made, the greater is your lack of knowledge of historical precedent. Three or more
even-numbered choices, in our judgment, indicate that it's time for a refresher course in
world history at your local community college. Lacking that, the very least you could do
would be to cancel your subscription to The National Review.
