ABC = American Broadcasting Company.

ABS = automatic braking system.

A.C. = alternating current (or: air conditioning).

A.D. = anno domini (Latin, meaning "year of the Lord"). Note: Many people think A.D. means "after death" but that is not right.

AIDS = Acquired Immuno-deficiency Syndrome.

AM = amplitude modulation.

a.m. = ante meridien (Latin, meaning "before noon").

a.s.a.p.= as soon as possible.

B.A. = Bachelor of Arts.

B.C.= Before Christ.

B.S.= Bachelor of Science.

b.s. = bull shit (slang, very impolite.

b.y.o.b. = Bring your own beer (or: bottle). Used to invite people to a party.

CBS = Columbia Broadcasting System.

CD = compact disc.

CNN = Cable News Network.

C.P.A.= Certified Public Accountant.

C.S.T. = Central Standard Time.

D.C. = direct current; or, District of Columbia.

DOS = disk operating system.

d.d.s.= doctor of dental surgery.

ESL = English as a Second Language.

e.t.a. = estimated time of arrival.

FM = frequency modulation.

GM = General Motors.

g.p.= general practitioner (a medical doctor with no specialty).

H.O.V. = High-occupancy vehicle.

IBM = International Business Machines.

i.e. = Latin "id est", meaning, "that is," or "that is to say."

INS = Immigration and Naturalization Service.
