Useful Abbreviations: Part 1

There are thousands of abbreviations in English. Some are so popular that people say the letters instead of the words. Here is a list of 30 such abbreviations. Your job: figure what each abbreviation means. Maybe the sentences will help a little!

ABC ________________________________ ABC is one of the largest TV networks.

ABS ________________________________ Be sure your new car has ABS. It’s much safer.

A.C. ________________________________ American electricity is 110-120 volts A.C.

A.D. ________________________________ England was conquered by France in 1066 A.D.

B.A. ________________________________ She wants to get a B.A. in music.

B.C. ________________________________ The oldest pyramids date from around 3500 B.C.

B.S. ________________________________ She wants a B.S. in physics.

b.s. ________________________________ "That’s all b.s.," he said rudely. I was shocked.

b.y.o.b. ________________________________ It’s a b.y.o.b. party, so I don’t want to go.

CBS ________________________________ CBS is one of the largest TV networks.

CD ________________________________ The sound on a CD is almost distortion-free.

CNN ________________________________ CNN is an all-news TV network.

C.P.A.________________________________ He’s worked as a c.p.a. since 1983.

C.S.T.________________________________ The TV movie starts at 9 C.S.T.

D.C. ________________________________ She lives in Washington, D.C.

DOS.________________________________ Microsoft DOS is used in most computers.

d.d.s.________________________________ He’s a d.d.s. Yes, but is he painless?

ESL ________________________________ ESL is too easy.

e.t.a.________________________________ The flight has an e.t.a. of 8:15.

FM ________________________________ KPFT, at 90.1 FM, is the best station in Houston.

GM ________________________________ How many shares of GM stock do you own?

g.p. ________________________________ He’s a g.p. He never wanted to specialize.

H.O.V.________________________________ The H.O.V. lane is open only during rush hour.

IBM ________________________________ How many shares of IBM stock do you own?

i.e. ________________________________ Frozen precipitation, i.e., snow, is rare in Houston.

INS ________________________________ Do you have a problem with INS?
