The Primrose Path Game:
How Close to Happiness Are You?

by Ceci Lumley

How far along the often difficult journey toward happiness are you?

The Magellan’s Log psycho-metaphysical research team has been studying the problems we all encounter in our quest for happiness and has concluded that, though the goal at times appears elusive, our distance from that goal can in fact be rather easily quantified.

Here then the results of our extensive, in-depth, team coverage of the search for contentment. Life being a journey, we have modeled the questions to give you an idea of how far you have come on this serpentine path.

For each question you are to estimate a distance. We have provided a space for you to enter the appropriate number. If the question doesn’t apply to you, enter zero. We’ve also provided a place for you to keep a running total of distance traveled.

You’ll find our interpretation of how far you've come on life’s long way at the end of the game.

Interpretation of the Total Number of Miles You Have Traveled on the Path to Happiness

Miles for This Question: _______.

Grand Total: ________

Interpretation of Results

If your Grand Total is 1 or more, you will find that on your deathbed your mind will be filled with regret, remorse, and an overwhelming sense of having made a very large and very simple mistake. Everybody from the guys on Tin Pan Alley to Lao-Tze to Jesus to Dorothy to Candide keeps saying that happiness is in your own backyard and all the other stuff just, well, leads you down that long, long primrose path away from your backyard and toward—there’s no polite way to put this—nowhere. Need we point out that the larger your Grand Total, the farther away you are from you-know-where.
