As the World Burns:
A Tiny Footnote to History
by Harriet Lobdell
Charlotte Ford, great-granddaughter of Henry Ford, felt our post-9/11 pain and responded
by publishing precisely the book we needed in our time of distress, angst, fear, and
trembling: 21st -Century Etiquette: Charlotte Ford's Guide to Manners for the
Modern Age.
At the publisher's party for the book, someone asked Ms. Ford what was the
worst social catastrophe she had ever experienced. As a service toward greater
understanding among the classes, we can do naught but pass on to you her verbatim reply as
printed in the New York Times:
"I've seen a man pick up the finger bowl and drink out of it.
He was at my table. I thought, 'Oh my goodness gracious!' Fortunately he was smart enough
to look around. He realized his error and put the bowl down."

to try to make the world a better place.
