Dreamtime
by Cheki Boggus
Here's a possibility regarding remembering dreams:
Could it be that we are the result of an evolutionary process which
selected for poor recall of dreams? Whatever dreams are, clear, detailed recall of dreams
would surely have gotten in the way of waking survival behavior. If we had remembered
dreams in detail 100,000 years ago, we would've had a much greater tendency to sit around
thinking about them all day instead of fending off sabre-tooth tigers or whatever.
Still, it is also possibly significant that the selection against dream
recall was not even close to total. As many people have found, with practice you can learn
to remember dreams in rather extraordinary depth and with regularity.
Could it then also be that we are evolutionarily now at a place where it
would be to our advantage to remember--and explore--the dream world?
