The Magellan's Log Coup Corner

coupcorner.gif (8452 bytes)Our reactions to the Bush-Baker Coup have pretty much run the gamut: From simple incredulity to alarmed analysis to troubled fiction to deep satire.

If you're a Magellan's Log regular, you know we tend toward a more playfully abstract take on the world (sort of the Kant-on-uppers approach?). But we are also aware that today's brutal Realpolitik can lead directly to tomorrow's pogrom.

We don't THINK America's headed there, but we see enough early- warning signs, some coming from people with the best intentions, others from people whose intentions may not be so good, that we have found ourselves continuing to react in print to the shenanigans emanating from Crawford, Texas, and environs.

To help readers (and us) keep track of our on-going reactions, we've created The Magellan's Log Coup Corner, which is nothing more than a central, linked list of the various pieces we've done on the Bush Ascendancy.

Was it a coup? Well, for humor writers it's certainly better source-material if it was a coup. For more serious writers, it's a lot meatier subject-matter if it was a coup. We'll leave it to future political scholars to decide whether it was a coup.

For now, here's what we've published, in chronological order (the newest reports are at the bottom of the list), related to the coup-that-wasn't-or-was-it?

The communiqués are in chronological order, the oldest being at the top of the list, the most recent added at the bottom.

The Florida Memorandum

In an open letter to the editors of the New York Times and the Washington Post, our own editor outlines the plot of a really bad political thriller-- or is it in fact a rough description of what actually happened in Florida, Nov. 7, 2000?
